Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is launching a ONE year Online Post Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion (applied focus on Tobacco Control) 2011-12 in E-Learning mode, under project Strengthening of Tobacco Control Efforts through innovative Partnerships and Strategies (STEPS).

The curriculum for this diploma program includes information adapted from material provided by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) and the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine with funding support from the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.

PGD-HPTC is the first ever PG diploma on health promotion with specialization in tobacco control launched in a developing country context and is geared towards training current early to mid-career public health professionals in the country. It allows professionals to conceptualize the role of health promotion and integrate it into their professional practices. Using LMS, students can access recorded lectures, quizzes, reading material, discussion forum, Question and Answer board, assignments, live talk using LMS. Government of India wants to give a unique ID number and a smart card, with biometric data in electronic chip, to every citizen. It aims to improve governance through increased usage of technology. Noble intention, indeed! But how to improve efficiency of people who collect, store and transmit this data into the card and secure databases? Don’t we know the blunders made in printing names, birth dates etc which appear on ration cards, voter cards and other ID proofs? Think about mixing & mis-match of biometric data like fingerprints and iris scan! Considering the sensitivity of electronic chips, and inability of poor farmers & labourers to keep it free of wear & tear, how effective & long lasting such smart cards would be if used regularly? And, in case of frequent replacements, who will bear the cost?
