Farmers and tribals in several states are agitating against forced acquisition of their lands by governments and corporates for various projects conveniently called as development projects. Some people believe that development is essential and there is nothing wrong in acquiring forest land or farmlands and using it for different projects. Others opine that such acquisition should be done after proper consultation with land owners and ensuring better compensation to them.
Farmers who are mostly at the receiving end when their fertile lands are acquired, demand that instead of meagre compensation, they should be made stakeholders and partners in the commercial and industrial projects to be implemented on their lands. While for others losing their land is painful as it is like giving up only option of livelihood.
As more such conflicts regarding land acquisition take place in the country, the question is whether it is indeed necessary to acquire vast farmlands for projects? Is better compensation only solution or other options available for development?

Survival is at stake

For the poor farmers and tribals, land is only productive resource which sustains them. Parting with this only mode of survival is never voluntary. Only when they are given hope of a better alternative of livelihood and opportunities for their children, they surrender land. But as we have seen, such false promises of jobs for them and their children never materialise, depriving the poor of their source of income and pushing them into deeper poverty.

Industrial and commercial development is ok but if all fertile land is acquired for various project, what will happen to food security of our large population? Already whole world is facing food shortage. where will we get our food, if we do not grow in India.

Compensation not enough

Certainly, the main issue is of compensation. If farmers get good money which can help start new business or buy land elsewhere, they would accept land acquisition plan but if the compensation is meagre, then conflict and anger will spread.

What is development?

Development means improving conditions for better life for all citizens and not for few. If a project will be useful for only few people, how can it be called development project?
