Contrary to the established notion, issue-oriented movies are becoming popular among Indians. Encouraged by the trend, young and enthusiastic film makers have begun to experiment with themes and scripts without losing sight of commercial aspects.

Movies like Swadesh, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Munna Bhai MBBS or the latest one Peepli Live, have effectively conveyed a social message without becoming dull or boring. Young or old, audiences have also loved these movies and the intended message too reached a larger population, unlike parallel cinema of 1970s and 80s.

But despite the wide popularity of such movies, a change in the social attitudes and practices is yet to be seen. Do these movies play an important role in shaping the consciousness of society or their effect does not last beyond few days? Can we expect the film makers to induce a social transformation through meaningful cinema or their role will not extend beyond entertainment of society?

form my point of view films like Do beegha Zameen,Mother india,Bandini (old) and now a days movies like Swadesh,3 Idiots,Tare zameen par, rang de Basanti these are such films, who carry a social message and they also have an after effect of watching movie.people come home disscussing about the film.somehow they want to connect with the situation in their reallife.they also compare the real and reel life. people try to find the solutionof their real life problmes from the film.so one should not take a issue based and good storyline film just a timepass.

Like some books leave lasting impression on readers, in the similar way many films remain in our memory for entire life. But to make a film with social message and not taking it masses doesn't help. Most social issues based films are made for awards and an elite audience. They can't leave lasting or temporary influence. Only popular and mainstream cinema with good story and message can be remembered always.

movie making is not a charitable industry. Movie-makers are aware that what kind of audience they have to target and what kind of movie is going to make money. They get the nerve of public and hit on that. They are smart, now the onus lies on us how much we carry back in our kitty after 3 hours of enlightenment (supposedly) in a dark hall.

People can not always see romantic films or period dramas. They are aware of issues around them and no longer aloof to the social upheavals and plight of disadvantaged sections. If carefully written and directed films are being screened, it is to fulfil public demand and not merely for artistic gratification. Certainly such films leave viewers emotionally affected and charged. How long a person remembers that film depends on his social state and environment.

Meaningful cinema remains marginalised

Movies the world over all mostly seen for entertainment and rarely for education. 9 out of 10 people go to watch a movie for fun and enjoyment. That explains why realistic cinema fails to collect revenue.
Some mainstream movies do attempt to convey a message but it is packaged in entertaining way so as not to affect box office collections.
Being a developing nation of millions of hopeful people, India produces most movies based on fantasy and romance. So-called meaningful cinema remains marginalised and an aberration. Few notable movies have tried to raise public issues built around popular themes, but their number and impact is not yet enough.

Movies do leave an imprint

It would not be appropriate to expect cinema to bring a social transformation but certain movies, old or new, have left an imprint on social psyche. While several movies during British rule inspired Indians for freedom struggle, many post independence movies effectively conveyed the message of social harmony and nationalism.

Unlike some of the big production houses, which make fairy tale movies shot in exotic locales, some producers and directors have given us entertaining yet educative cinema. We can not expect a film to shake the consciousness of every cinema lover but the meaningful cinema of recent times have been successful in raising questions important for society.

I think cinema will remain an important medium of conveying social message and it depends on the team behind a movie to make sure the message is delivered in an entertaining way.

Coke Nation

The news that Indians consume far less aerated beverages each year than their neighbours in Pakistan and China could be interpreted differently. In comparison to per capita annual consumption of 39 and 21 bottles of aerated drinks in China and Pakistan respectively, average Indian drinks just about 14 bottles in a year. For Coca-Cola this means a serious job at hand for which the company has announced an advertisement budget of $5 billion. For the company, economic growth of a country and its peoples' thirst for aerated beverages is directly coorelated.

Coca-Cola doesn't consider 'negative' publicity for cola behind poor consumption of the aerated beverage in India. As per its books, brand Coca-Cola has registered consecutive growth for past 27 quarters and has been a leader with a brand volume of 30 per cent. For Coca-Cola the target is to turn it into a 'Coke Nation', on the lines of Mexico where per capita annual consumption is 745 bottles..Whether Indian consumer exercises restraint in gulping the drink whose health consequences are all but known, the flipside to the story is that  the state governments are falling prey to Coca-Cola's investment plans?

Waste Appetite

The clock has turned full circle! After dumping industrial and toxic trash in the developing world all these years, Europe is now shopping for garbage to keep its cities, schools and homes heated. What better place than the developing world to shop for garbage! Reports indicate that northern Europe needs more than 700 million tons of trash to keep its waste-to-energy plants running. Most of its current demand is either domestically met or from garbage shipped from southern Europe.Yet, the demand is far more than what neighboring countries can spare after meeting their domestic needs.

As more waste incinerators are being built in Sweden, Norway, Austria and Germany to meet the growing demand for heating public places, these countries are left with two options - either encourage households to produce more trash or else import garbage from across the world. For sure, it is easy to import than to produce! A company in England is already shipping some 1,000 tons of garbage to keep its systems running. Since incinerators have cornered environmental controversy in India and for rightful reasons, there exists an opportunity to explore feasibility of exporting as much as 109,589 tonnes of garbage that piles our streets on a daily basis.
