Most educated Indians are outraged by the recent proposal of Planning Commission to fix poverty line at Rs 32 a day for urban poor and Rs 26 a day for rural poor after the Supreme Court chastened the government for keeping the limit at a lowly Rs 15 a day fixed for years.
While rich countries have a much higher poverty line, the World Bank for nearly 20 years kept its poverty line at USD 1 a day. After much criticism, the highly paid economists of the World decided to increase it by 25 percent and fix new poverty line at USD 1.25 a day. The question need to be asked is why not keep salaries of economists also fixed for the duration they want poverty line to be fixed.
