Becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) was never so rewarding in India! MPs will now get Rs 5 crore instead of Rs 2 crore to spend under MPLADS- MP Local Area Development Scheme. What is the rationale behind this increase? MPs say with a meagre budget of Rs 2 crore, they can't satisfy increasing demands of their constituents (and probably their families as well!) for 'development works'. Sounds sensible, but then what happens to crores of rupees available to each block and district under umpteen schemes for carrying out development works?
With the widely acceptable rate of 20 percent cut, even a morally upright MP can now save Rs. 1 crore per year. So, along with increase in the number of billionaires we will get to see a lot more 'development work' around us.
