While other nations feel threatened by direct climate change effects, Saudi Arabia worries about its economy, as a coming UN climate deal is likely to limit oil sales.
"It's a matter of survival for us, also. So we are among the most vulnerable countries, economically," says Mohammed Al Sabban, lead climate negotiator for Saudi Arabia.
Mr. Al Sabban stresses that his country is striving to diversify, not least by promoting solar energy. "We have a lot of sun, a lot of land. We can export solar power to our neighbours on a very large scale and that is our strategic objective to diversify our economy, it will be huge. We need the industrialized countries to assist us through direct investment, transfer of technologies."
Specifically, Saudi Arabia wants access to funds within an existing UN scheme dedicated to combat climate change effects.
