While ancient manuscripts, books and other literary works remain in dilapidated condition for want of proper care and storage, Congress led UPA government has decided to digitise every piece of material available with Nehru Memorial Library at Teen Murti Bhavan, New Delhi so as to ensure its long and safe storage.
Teen Murti Bhavan was the official residence of former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and most of the documents and photographs to be digitised were parts of his personal collection, including personal correspondence he had with his family members.
Soon, people will be able to read online several of letters written by Motilal Nehru, Vijaylakshmi Pandit and others to Jawahar Lal on political and personal issues.
Other collections of manuscripts that will be uploaded on the Nehru Memorial website include writings of Nehru’s associates, friends and staff, transcripts of oral interviews, nearly 30, 000 photographs, several films and audio clips, including most of Nehru’s speeches.
The Prime Minister’s Office had sanctioned a substantial grant in 2009 for digitisation of all the archival material available at Teen Murti.
The government is yet to take a decision whether to charge or not readers and researchers for viewing or downloading the digitised online material.
